This required pre-service training prepares Texas child care staff with the health and safety knowledge they need before working with children — covering first aid, fire extinguisher use, hazardous materials, food allergies, safe sleep practices, field trip and water activity protocols, and proper handwashing procedures. Available both virtually and in person, this module ensures your team meets state licensing requirements while building the practical skills that protect children every day.

About This Course

Hours Earned: 8

Texas Health and Human Services requires all child care staff to complete pre-service training before they begin working with children, and health and safety knowledge is among the most critical components of that requirement. Pre-service Module 2 is designed to give new staff and program administrators a thorough grounding in the health and safety practices mandated by Texas child care licensing standards — from responding to medical emergencies and managing hazardous materials to preventing illness through proper handwashing and ensuring children are safe on field trips and in or near water.

This module is the second in Emergent ED's pre-service training series and builds naturally on the supervision and guidance foundations covered in Module 1. Together, they form a complete, licensing-compliant onboarding framework for Texas child care programs of every type.

At Emergent ED, our training is delivered by professionals who have owned and operated licensed Texas child care centers. That experience means every topic is taught in context — not just what the rules say, but what they look like in practice when children are in your care. Participants leave with both the compliance documentation they need and the real-world readiness to apply it.

This training is recognized and accepted as meeting Texas HHS pre-service requirements for licensed child care centers, licensed homes, and registered homes.

What You Will Learn

  • First Aid and Fire Extinguishers — Foundational first aid response procedures for child care settings and proper use of fire extinguishers; what to do in the critical first moments of an emergency before professional help arrives
  • Hazardous Materials and Food Allergies — Safe storage, labeling, and handling of hazardous materials; recognizing food allergy symptoms, understanding anaphylaxis risk, and following protocols that protect children with known allergies
  • Naptime Safety — Safe sleep practices for infants and young children in accordance with Texas licensing standards; how to reduce the risk of sleep-related incidents and maintain proper monitoring during rest periods
  • Field Trips and Water Activities — Planning and supervision requirements for off-site trips and activities involving water; risk management considerations and the specific Texas licensing obligations that apply
  • Handwashing in Child Care — Correct technique and timing for staff and children; when and how handwashing must occur under Texas licensing standards and why it remains one of the most effective tools for preventing the spread of illness
